| Tawni Shuler |
Born on a ranch in Wyoming, Tawni Shuler was enticed to paint and draw early on by the art of western painters Frederick Remington and Charlie Russell, which she had the opportunity to see in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody. Later on she moved to Montana, where she attended the University of Montana, Missoula and completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Shuler graduated from Arizona State University in the spring of 2008 with her Master of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in painting and drawing. Currently she is the Programming Director for the Red Lodge Clay Center in Red Lodge, Montana. Shuler delves into the microscopic details that make up daily life and the world around her. She is inspired by memories of growing up in rural Wyoming and being familiarized with the landscape and the cycles of birth, growth, decay, and death. She works primarily with painting and drawing materials, as well as mixed media such as hair and sand, creating textures, illusions of depth and organic forms gleaned from her memory as well as observation. While attending ASU she taught foundation level drawing and color theory classes. She has also taught art classes for ASU’s Herberger College at Large, the Shemer Art Center and Museum in Phoenix, AZ and summer classes at Phoenix Country Day School. Her work has been shown at the g2 Gallery, Scottsdale, AZ; Harry Wood Gallery, Tempe, AZ; Gallery Blue, Missoula, MT; Gallery of Visual Art, Missoula, MT; NWC Art Gallery, Powell, WY; and was published in Southwest Art’s 2005 Annual "21 under 31" Emerging Artist Issue. Most recently she had work exhibited in the Americas 2008: Paperworks Exhibition in Minot, North Dakota and A Sense of Place Exhibition at the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art in Augusta, Georgia. |
